The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Plateau chapter, has decried the dearth of workforce in the health sector in the state.

The Chairman of the NMA in Plateau, Dr Titus Dajel, expressed the worry in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday.

Dajel said that the inadequate workforce in the health facilities was unacceptable and affecting health delivery in the state.

He called on the State Government to prioritise the recruitment of staff in the health sector and ensure that no embargo was placed on employment of doctors at any time in the state.

The chairman also enjoined government to increase of budgetary allocation to the sector.

He noted that an increase in the budgetary allocation to the sector would enhance manpower training, infrastructure and facility upgrade for the benefit of the populace.

Dajel said there was an urgent need for the state government to take deliberate steps to ensure that the people had access to qualitative, effective and affordable health care.

He said this could be achieved through a health insurance scheme which would cover both the civil servants and the unemployed, especially those in the rural communities.

The chairman further disclosed that the NMA in a bid to eliminate quackery in the profession introduced the use of doctor’s stamp/seal to authenticate all medical reports and certificates.

He advised all institutions to insist on the presence of a doctor’s stamp or seal on all medical reports or certificates.

Dajel noted that the doctor’s stamp/seal authenticated all such reports or certificates emanating from the registered members of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria. (NAN)
