Study reveals mothers who don’t get enough sleep have a greater tendency to engage in permissive parenting

We all know that getting a good night’s sleep is important to our health as it decreases one’s risk for serious illnesses such as hypertension, heart disease and diabetes. But did you know that sleep deprivation can also impact your parenting style and can even get in the way of raising well-balanced children?

A study conducted by a human development and family studies researcher from the University of Illinois found that there is a link between maternal sleep and permissive parenting. Published in the Journal of Sleep Research, findings from the report revealed that mothers who don’t get enough shut-eye have a greater tendency to engage in permissive parenting, a parenting style marked by lax or inconsistent discipline.

As the Arab world is getting ready to celebrate Mother’s Day on March 21, Sleep Expo Middle East, the region’s first-of-its-kind event dedicated to promoting a growing sleep movement, is pushing for greater awareness on the importance of quality sleep. Organized by Media Fusion, Sleep Expo Middle East is scheduled on April 11-13, 2019 at the Dubai Festival City Arena and will bring together sleep experts and innovators to discuss and showcase the latest advances in in the sleep technology space.

Taher Patrawala, the director, Media Fusion, said: “Parenting has never been known to be an easy task, especially for mothers. Not getting enough sleep can make one’s mood go up and down the day after, and it can make you lose focus or tire out quite easily. Multiple days of poor sleep can lead into long-term consequences – in addition to serious health conditions, sleep loss has negative impact on the way you interact with your family. As the study confirms, sleep-deprived moms are more likely to let their children get away and engage in risky behaviours.”

Taher further commented that getting quality sleep not helps in making moms become effective parents but it also makes it easier to tackle life in general. “This is the reason why Sleep Expo Middle East is finally happening. We want to point out to everyone – mothers in particular – the need for self-care and the importance of sleep in our health and productivity.”
