THE Rotaract Club of Ojodu Ambassadors has urged federal and state governments to pay more attention to primary health centres (PHCs) by providing adequate equipment in order to improve healthcare delivery at the grassroots.

The Rotaract President, Mr Adekunle Akinde, said this while presenting donation of health equipment to Ojodu Primary Health Centre on Monday in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the organisation donated digital thermometers, bed spreads, wall clocks, buckets and other consumable items to the centre.

He said that many of primary health centres needed government urgent attention to enable them function well.

“We notice that the health sector requires emergency attention for the sake of those at the grassroots and the vulnerable in the society.

“Recently, we came on a visit to this health centre and noticed it lacks some health equipment, we decided to find out what they need.

“They gave us some of the basic things they need to make their work better and productive,” Akinde said.

He appealed to other organisations to also support the government by equipping primary healthcare centres with drugs and needed equipment to ensure availability and accessibility.

“We all know that a lot will prefer to go to general or private hospitals instead of going to primary health centres due to lack of equipment,” Akinde said.

NAN reports that the items were received on behalf of the Primary Health Centre by Mrs Adeoti Olayinka, the nursing officer-in-charge.

Olayinka thanked the organisation for extending its contribution to the health centre and called on other non-governmental organisations to always support primary health centres.

She said that a lot of people who came yo the centre for treatment could not afford expensive hospitals but these items would improve health service delivery.
