WIFE of Lagos State Governor, Dr Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, has urged three tiers of government and stakeholders in the nation’s health sector to ensure that Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) were functioning.

Sanwo-Olu made the plea at the 16th Horatio Oritsejolomi Thomas and 57th Founder’s Day Lecture organised by College of Medicine of the University of Lagos (CMUL), Idi-Araba, Lagos.

The lecture was entitled: “Health Challenges in Nigeria: Building on the Legacies of Our Leaders”.

The governor’s wife was represented by Dr Ibijoke Sodeinde, former Permanent Secretary, Primary Healthcare Board (PHCB).

She said that primary healthcare centres were critical to the attainment of the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) being the closest to the people.

“A situation where we have many PHCs that are just mere structure and not functional, is not acceptable.

“We must go beyond thinking outside the box to ensure that we come up with immediate and long-term solutions to challenges in the health sector,” Sanwo-Olu said.

She said that the theme was particularly apt and instructive.

According to her, we all need to return to the drawing board and look at the ways to address myriads of challenges plaguing the nation’s health sector.

“We must look at the best ways to build on the gains of the past to address, for instance, brain drain in the medical sector and see how we can turn it to brain gain.

“We must rethink on issue of funding and health financing, and how to ensure that there is affordable, effective and efficient health insurance scheme, among others,” Sanwo-Olu said.

She then called on stakeholders in the sector to make a commitment by playing their parts effectively to ensure that we move from talk to action. (NAN)
