DOCTORS in Italy have found an “enormous” tumour on a 64-year-old woman who neglected health check-ups for fear of contracting the coronavirus.

Surgeons removed from the woman’s abdominal-pelvic area a lump measuring 70 centimetres in diameter and weighing 20 kilograms, the Cardarelli hospital in Naples said on Thursday.

“The patient was very scared of COVID-19, so she avoided all check-ups, in spite having symptoms,” Giovanni Vennarecci, a Head Surgeon at the Cardarelli, explained.

“Over months the swelling grew more and more, until the woman finally convinced herself to visit a gynaecologist,” Vennarecci added.

The visit led to a cancer diagnosis.

The operation was successful and the patient is now back home with her family, the hospital said.

“Everything went in the best possible way,” according to the surgeon.
