NIGERIAN Communications Commission’s Consumer Conversation forum was recently held at the agrarian and agricultural town of Ibillo in Akoko-Edo Local Council of Edo State. NCC’s Zonal Office-driven Consumer Conversation is one of the programmes of the 2017 Year of the Nigerian Telecom Consumer launched by the NCC in March to deepen engagement with stakeholders through tripartite discourse involving telecom consumers, service providers and NCC in other address the challenges of the telecom consumers.

The attendance and participation at the forum was quite impressive particularly with the presence of mass of people across different strata of the society, some of who confirmed they had knowledge of NCC activities especially the Year of the Telecom Consumer programmes.
Matters of interest to the Nigerian telecom consumers such as quality of service and how to manage the attendant challenges, as well as efforts of the commission to tackle those challenges were discussed in a particularly lively manner.

Participants were told that by activating the 2442 Do Not Disturb Short Code they could manage better the unsolicited messages they receive on their devices. They were also informed of the need to utilise the 622 Toll Free Line provided by the NCC to enable consumers to escalate unresolved complaints they may have reported to their service providers but which may not have been resolved to their satisfaction.

The commission’s staff present at the event also used the opportunity of the forum to correct impressions about the bandied dangers of telecom masts. They told the participants that there was no scientific evidence that telecom base stations or masts could be injurious to their health in any form.

In attendance was NCC staff from the Lagos Zonal Office lead by Kenneth Uzoekwe, zonal controller, who represented Umar Danbatta, executive vice chairman, NCC. Also in attendance were, Fidelis Owolabi, chairman Ibillo Motor Park; Shedrack Akande, vice chairman; Damola, financial secretary; and Friday Babatunde, secretary general, among others.
