THE Imo House of Assembly has expressed concern over the dearth of teachers in public primary and secondary schools in the state.
It, therefore, urged Gov. Hope Uzodimma to approve and issue waivers to the State Education Management Board and State Universal Basic Education Board authorizing teachers’ recruitment to raise the number.
The resolution was made, following a motion moved by Dr Arthur Egwim (APC Ideato North) at the plenary session on Wednesday.
Egwim said that the state school system lacked qualified teachers largely due to death, retirement, and other circumstances.
He said the situation had overstretched the available teachers, making the school system to operate against the United Nation’s approved teacher-to-pupil ratio.
He regretted that the development had negatively affected the standard of education and productivity, especially in public schools.
The lawmaker expressed the hope that the situation could be salvaged through the recruitment of qualified teachers, who currently roam the streets in search of employment.
Supporting the motion, Mr Dominic Ezerioha (APC), representing Oru West, spoke of the need to identify and penalize teachers, who often abandoned their duty post in pursuit of personal businesses.
Also, Mrs Uju Onwudiwe (Njaba APC) regretted that most of the teachers in the school system lacked the requisite qualification to teach.
Onwudiwe contended that the capacity of applicants should be properly scrutinized before they are employed to ensure quality teaching and learning.
The Speaker, Mr Paul Emeziem, ruled in favor of the motion, following the overwhelming support by members. (NAN)
