INEC welcomes new commissioners

THE Chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, welcomes the six new national INEC commissioners who were sworn in by President Muhammadu Buhari; in the conference held by INEC on Wednesday, February 23rd, 2022, in Abuja.

The commissioners were May Agbamuche-Mbu, a lawyer, Mohammed Haruna, a journalist, Sam Olumekun, Kenneth Nnamdi Ukeagu, Rhoda Gumus, a professor of Engineering, Mobibbo Abubakar Akali, a retired major general.

The Chairman noted that four of the commissioners are not new to the Commission. “Four of them are not new to the Commission. May Agbamuche-Mbu, a lawyer, and Mohammed Haruna, a journalist, have been re-appointed to serve for a second term. Sam Olumekun, a retired civil servant, has served for two terms as Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, in many states, including Lagos, while Kenneth Nnamdi Ukeagu has been a career staff of the Commission, rising to the rank of Director,” he said.

He expressed the hope that the new commissioners would bring in their cumulative experiences from their diverse fields to strengthen the work of the commission and conduct free, fair, and credible elections.

The Chairman urged the newly welcomed commissioners to display their vast knowledge and experiences to the service of the country “I urge you to deploy your vast knowledge and diverse experiences to the service of the country as unbiased referees,” he said. 

He also said that the success of the commission depended on their integrity as election managers in this as election managers. He also advised that the commissioners should be strict in the application of the law, firm in handling the public trust bestowed on them, and be fair in their dealings with political parties, candidates and other stakeholders as they abide by their oaths of office.

“I am confident that you will join us in further extending the frontiers of free and fair elections in Nigeria,” he said.
