AN International Organisation, IntelliDigest Africa Ltd., says it has a commitment to fight against food wastes across the South East States.

The group in partnership with the Faculty of Agriculture, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, said that irrespective of economic challenges, states, especially in South East still record high levels of food wastes.

The Business Development Executive of IntelliDigest Ltd, Ezenwafor Odera, said this during a virtual news conference to flag-off the awareness campaign on Global Food Loss and Waste Tracker in Africa, held at Awka Windows on American Office, Awka.

The conference was attended by the Vice-Chancellor, Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Prof. Charles Esimone, represented by the Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, Prof. Nkeiru Meludo, Ifeyinwa Kanu (USA), community leaders, market leaders among others.

Odera also said that the walk would be held across the states — Anambra, Imo, Enugu, Abia and Ebonyi — to sensitise residents on the dangers of wasting food at this period where Nigerian farmers were facing challenges of herdsmen, banditry, kidnapping, Boko Haram insurgency and unknown gunmen attacks.

He said if the ideas when fully incorporated in Nigeria, would create jobs for not less than 10,000 unemployed.

Prof. Solomon Chuka Nwigbo, the Director Technology Incubation Centre of UNIZIK, said the essence of the programme was to gather information on waste reduction, especially now there was scarcity of food.

He observed that technology would help farmers to reach out to consumers on availability of their goods before they perish.

The Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, Prof. Nkeiru Melodu, while commending the initiative, noted that the programme would help families, especially, the poor ones in the society to understand why food should not be wasted.

She assured IntelliDigest Ltd of the university’s readiness to partner with them to achieve the set goals.

One of the members of the staff of IntelliDigest, Ejim Kenechukwu, said the application had been introduced in the play store, where one could download to monitor and manage food waste and food losses.

Ejim urged individuals and farmers to embrace technology and supervise the management of food consumption and production in their environment.
