ISMAILA Isa Funtua, a close friend of President Muhammadu Buhari, has died of cardiac arrest on Monday night, July 20.

Realnews learnt that Funtua, who is from Katsina State, drove himself to the hospital along with a relative when he felt unwell. He will be buried on Tuesday according Islamic rites.

Funtua, a publisher of the defunct Democrat, was a renowned business executive and public officer with more than 30 years of management experience.

Funtua was the personnel manager in United Textiles Limited, UNTL, responsible for over 10,000 staff and a one-time minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

He is the founder of Bulet International Nigeria Limited (the largest wholly owned indigenous construction company) which built most of the iconic public buildings in Abuja.

Wada Maida, chairman of the News Agency of Nigeria and Peoples Media Limited, recalled that despite the fact that Funtua rested his paper, he kept his contributions to the media industry so much so that he was made a special trustee after serving as the president of the Newspaper Proprietors Association of Nigeria, NPAN, for eight years.

Maida, also a close friend of Funtua, told Realnews on telephone Monday night that “Funtua, a very generous person, was so committed to whatever ever assignment he was given. We are going to miss him a lot at both provincial level because he is one of the elders, very active in his community and nationally.” –  with additional reports from Daily Trust
