TWO men, Kamarudeen Mahamudu and Adekunle Oriola, who allegedly hacked into the server of the Leadway Assurance in a bid to commit fraud, were on Friday brought before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.
Mahamudu, 28, and Oriola, 40, appeared on charges of conspiracy, fraud and impersonation. The court, however, did not take their pleas.
Chief Magistrate Adeola Adedayo ordered that the duo should be kept at the Ikoyi Prisons for the next 30 days, pending when the case would be filed before a high court.
She adjourned the case until Sept. 30 for mention.
Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp. Chinalu Uwadione, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on July 17 in Lagos.
He alleged that the duo hacked into the internet server of Leadway Assurance and modified the e-mail account of the company.
“The duo impersonated as account officers of the company and instructed the account officer of the company’s branch in the UK to transfer a huge amount out of the account,” he said.
The alleged offences contravene Sections 15, 19, 22(2)(3)(c) of the Cyber Crime (Prohibition) Act, 2015, and Sections 380 and 389 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. (NAN)
