Court jails man 6 months for stealing plantain, coco-yam

AN Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court in Osun on Tuesday, sentenced a 39-year-old man, Wasiu Lekan, to six months in prison for stealing bunches of plantain and coco-yam.

The prosecution told the court that the bunches of plantain and bag of coco-yam were worth N21,000 and N15,000 respectively.

The Magistrate, Habibat Basiru, said that since the defendant pleaded guilty to the offence, the court had no option than to sentence him accordingly.

Basiru, however, gave the convict option of N20, 000 fine and warned him to desist from committing further crime.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Lekan was sentenced on one-count charge of stealing.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Emmanuel Abdullahi, told the court that Lekan committed the offence on Feb. 8, 2019 around 7:30a.m at Legan Town in Ile-Ife.

Abdullahi said the stolen items belonged to Prince Oriade Akeem, who reported the matter at “C” Division, Agaun Police Station, Ile-Ife.

Lekan said that the offence contravened Section 390 (9) of the state’s penal code.
