AN Egyptian court on Tuesday sentenced seven people, including a Muslim Brotherhood businessman and his son, to 25 years imprisonment on charges of “harming the national economy.’’

The verdict against the businessman, Hassan Malek, was issued by Cairo Criminal Court, which also sentenced three others to 10 years imprisonment and acquitted 14 others in the same case.

It ordered that all those convicted be placed under police probation after serving their jail terms.

Malek was arrested in 2015 in a police raid on his house in New Cairo.

Authorities said that they found publications containing Muslim Brotherhood plans to harm the Egyptian economy by collecting dollars from the market to create continuous demand for the foreign currency and carrying out terrorist attacks on the tourism sector.

Malek had all his assets frozen in 2014 by the state as part of a harsh crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood leaders following the ouster of Islamist president, Mohammed Morsi.

Egyptian authorities had declared the Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist organisation and rounded up thousands of its members and loyalists.

The authorities accused the group of receiving funds from economic entities, businessmen and supporters to carry out violent acts against the state’s institutions. (dpa/NAN)
