Judiciary
AN Upper Area Court sitting in Jiwa, Abuja, on Tuesday sentenced two carpenters to eight months in prison each for issuing death threats.
The Judge, Mohammed Marafa, sentenced Wayandi Ayuba and Gambo Mohammed after they pleaded guilty to assault and criminal intimidation and begged for leniency.
Marafa, however, gave the convicts an option to pay N40, 000 fine each.
He warned them to desist from committing crime.
Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Babajide Olanipekun, told the court that the complainants, Ms Mary Lamba and Paul Akpan, reported the matter at the Gwagwa Divisional Police Headquarters on Aug. 30.
He said the convicts and two others at large intimidated the complainants with a knife, asking them to say their last prayers , on the railway track, Kagini, Abuja on Aug. 29.
He said the convicts and their accomplices beat up the complainants and stole four cell phones, a white handbag and N25, 200 cash.
The prosecutor said when Ayuba and Mohammed were arrested, the stolen items were recovered from them but they could not produce the N25, 200.
He said the offence contravened the provisions of sections 96, 265, 397 and 290 of the Penal Code. (NAN)
