A 25-year-old driver, Johnson Adebayo, who eloped with his employer’s car valued at N5 million, was on Thursday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, in Lagos charged with stealing.

The defendant, whose house address was not provided, is facing trial on a charge of stealing.

The Prosecutor, ASP. Clifford Ogu, said the defendant committed the offence on July 2 at Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.

Ogu said that the defendant, who was employed as a driver by the complaint, Mrs Idera Jimoh in May, stole her employer’s Toyota Venza car.

He told the court that the defendant bolted away with the car to an unknown destination.

“Efforts to retrieve the car proved unsuccessful as he refused to pick the complainant’s calls.

“But, with the aid of a tracker, police found and arrested the defendant; he and the repossessed car were taken to the station,” the prosecutor said.

Ogu said the offence contravened Section 287(7) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the section prescribes seven years imprisonment for any convicted of stealing.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Magistrate, Mr J.A Adegun, granted the defendant bail of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

Adegun held that the sureties should be gainfully employed and must show evidence of two year’s tax payment to the Lagos State Government as part of the bail conditions.

He adjourned the case until Sept. 3 for mention. (NAN)
