Eight suspects arrested in connection with the nude video of the Majority Leader of Osun State House of Assembly, Mr. Timothy Owoeye, were arraigned before a Chief Magistrate Court in Osogbo on Wednesday.
The suspects were brought to court in September, but they could not be arraigned following the disruption of court proceedings by the supporters of the lawmaker who thronged the court in large number and their noise made it impossible for the court to sit, despite the intervention of security agents.
Security was beefed up on Wednesday as the suspects were brought to court from the prison custody where they were kept.
The Attorney General of the state, who was represented by the Chief State Counsel, Mr. Moses Faremi, made an application to the magistrate, Mr. Olusegun Ayilara, that the state should be allowed to take over the case from the Police; and the magistrate ruled in his favour.
Faremi also sought the leave of the court to substitute the charges against the accused persons, but the counsel for first, second, third and fifth persons, Mr. Kazeem Badmus, objected to this.
He argued that the court should give the defence counsels time to study the new charge sheet, while reminding the magistrate that the business of the day was to rule on the application for bail of the accused persons. Other counsels aligned with Badmus’ submission.
But the magistrate, in his ruling, said the prosecution was at liberty to substitute the charge and he subsequently ruled against the application for bail. – Punch
