An engineer, Ewarts Oghenetega, who allegedly conducted himself in a manner likely to cause breach of peace by threatening to kill his neighbour, on Tuesday appeared before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.

The 44-year-old defendant, whose residential address was not given, is facing a two-count charge  of assault and breach of the peace.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The engineer allegedly beat one Mrs Stella Odewole and threatened to kill her following an unresolved argument, according to the prosecution.

ASP Akeem Raji told the court that the defendant committed the offences on Oct. 10 at 8.00 a. m. at No. 16 Soretire St., Ogba, Lagos.

Raji said that the defendant assaulted Odewole and caused her injuries on the hands as she was taking her child to school.

“The complainant had reported the defendant to his elder brother.

“The defendant ended up beating the complainant as they could not resolve their differences,” he said.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs O. A. Layinka, admitted to the defendant to N50, 000 bail with two sureties in like sum.

She ordered that the sureties must be gainfully employed and have evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

NAN reports that the alleged offences violate Sections 168, 172 and 173 of the Criminal laws of Lagos State 2015, (Revised).

Assault is punishable with three years’ jail term while breach of the peace attracts six months’ imprisonment.

The Magistrate adjourned the case until Nov. 13 for mention. (NAN)
