Man, 64, faces trial for manslaughter charge

A 64-year-old man, Usman Akewushola, who allegedly drove recklessly to kill a pedestrian, appeared on Friday before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos for manslaughter charge.

Akewushola, who resides at Abule Egba, a suburb of Lagos, is being tried for reckless driving and manslaughter.

The Police Prosecutor, Sgt. Raphael Donny, told the court that the accused committed the offences on June 9, at Obadeyi Bus Stop, Ijaiye, Lagos.

Donny said that the accused, who drove his Toyota Saloon car in a dangerous manner and hit two pedestrians, unfortunately killed one of them, Mr Joseph Nnabor on the spot.

“The second time, Mr Dumondi Adekunbi, is still receiving treatment at the hospital,” he said.

Donny said that the accused was apprehended by passersby when he was about to escape.

The offences contravened Sections 18 and 20 of the Road Traffic Acts of Lagos State, 2012.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

In her ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Mrs A. Adedayo, granted the accused bail in the sum of one million naira with two sureties in like sum and  adjourned the case until July 16 for mention.
