Man docked for allegedly snatching car at gunpoint

A commercial motorcyclist, Richard Akpa, who allegedly snatched a car at gunpoint, was on Wednesday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

The accused, 34, who lives at Alfa Oriyomi area of Ibeju-Lekki in Lagos, is standing trial on a two-count charge before Chief Magistrate O.A. Layinka.

The prosecutor, ASP. Edet Okoi, told the court that the crime was committed at Ajah-Elemoro area of Lagos at 9.00 p.m on Jan. 25.

Okoi alleged that the accused and others at large, conspired to snatch cars from an unsuspecting people along the expressway at gunpoint.

The prosecutor said that the accused snatched a Toyota Camry with registration number EKY 968 BX valued at N2.3 million at gunpoint.

He said that the property belong to Mr Adebayo Olanrewaju, the complainant.

“On the said date, the complainant, while driving along the expressway, was suddenly blocked by the accused and his gang, who pointed a gun at him and forcefully snatched the car from him.

“The accused was apprehended by the police after information reached them through the effort of the person he was about selling the car to,’’ Okoi said.

The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Sections 229 and 297 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

Section 229 provides a life imprisonment for robbery offence, if found guilty.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to him.

Layinka granted a bail of N500, 000 to the accused with two sureties in like sum.

She said that one of the sureties should be a blood relation of the accused, who must be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
