Governor Willie Obiano has urged the judiciary to expedite action in ensuring prompt dispensation of justice. “It will promote prison decongestion and prompt delivery of justice, as justice delayed is justice denied.’’

Obiano said this during a Holy Mass to mark the commencement of the 2018/2019 Anambra State Judiciary Legal Year at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Awka.

“There are many inmates awaiting trials at various prisons. So, I urge you to devote more time to the treatment of criminal cases.

“We will give the judiciary maximum collaboration to offer prerogative of mercy to some inmates,’’ he said. The governor expressed happiness over contributions of the judiciary to national development.

In a Homily, Paulinus Ezeokafor, a most reverend and the Catholic bishop of Awka Diocese, expressed displeasure at what he described as violations of the Federal character principles in appointments.

“I urge you and other legal practitioners to challenge the trend, in order to ensure obedience to the law.

“So legal practitioners should utilise their works in propagating the truth by allowing the light of God to guide their actions,’’ he said.

He also enjoined the judiciary to always avail inmates awaiting trials quality legal services to enhance the treatment of their cases.

Justice Peter Umeadi, the Anambra State chief judge, pledged the readiness of the judiciary toward ensuring efficient administration of justice in the area.

The programme was graced by judges, magistrates, lawyers, government officials, traditional rulers, judicial workers and other dignitaries.
