A Magistrates’ Court in Minna on Tuesday sentenced a scavenger, Bello Mohammed, to 12 months imprisonment for receiving stolen car batteries.

Mohammed was arraigned on a one-count charge of receiving stolen property, contrary to Section 317 of the Penal Code.

The Prosecutor, Sgt. John Steven, told the court that one Oluwakunle and Kasim Ibrahim reported the matter to the police on July 31.

Steven said the complainants alleged that one Umar Jibo trespassed into their compound at Maitumbi area of  Minna and made away with three car batteries.

He was said to have sold two of the batteries to the accused at the rate of N6,000.

The prosecutor said the accused confessed to the crime while the two batteries were recovered from him.

When the charge was read to him, the accused pleaded guilty and begged the court for leniency.

The prosecutor thereafter prayed the court to try the accused summarily in line with Section 157 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

The Magistrate, Fati Auna, sentenced him to 12 months in jail or in the alternative pay a fine of N20,000. (NAN)
