Security in court for allegedly damaging cinema elevator worth N1m

A 30-year-old security guard, Daniel Douglas, on Wednesday appeared in a Yaba Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly damaging an elevator worth N1 million in a cinema house.

The police charged Douglas, who resides at Liker Str., in Jibowu area of Lagos with criminal damage to property, to which he pleaded not guilty.

The Police Counsel, Sgt. Godwin Oriabure, told the court that the defendant committed the offence at 6 p.m. on Aug. 24, at Light house cinema, Muritala Mohammed way, Jibowu, Yaba.

He said that the defendant who had worked as a security guard in the cinema for two years, was recently placed on half salary administrative sanction due to bad work ethics.

The prosecution said that the defendant had damaged the cinema’s lift machine valued at N1million, because he had not been paid for two months.

He said that the offence contravened the provision of Section 339 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Section 339 stipulates two years jail term for the offence of willful damage to property upon conviction.

The Magistrate, Mrs Oluwatoyin Ojuromi, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N100, 000 bail with two sureties in like sum.

Ojuromi ordered that the sureties must be above 40 -years-old.

She adjourned the case until Sept. 10 for mention.
