Unemployed man, 23, faces theft charge

A 23-year-old unemployed man, David Joseph, was on Monday brought before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, facing charges of stealing some gas cylinders valued at N233, 500.

Joseph, of no fixed address, is standing trial on a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy and stealing as he was in possession of a car suspected to be stolen.

The Prosecutor, Sgt. Friday Mameh, told the court that the accused committed the offences from Aug. 14 to Sept. 25 at 4.00a.m at No. 39A, Adebayo Doherty St. Lekki Phase 1 and at No. 7, Baale St., Itedo, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.

Mameh said that the accused was also in possession of a white Toyota Corolla car with Registration No. KJA 07 DU, suspected to have been stolen.

Mameh also said that the accused stole 15 gas cylinders worth N143, 000, belonging to Mr Sunday Okoh.

He said that the Joseph stole two 50kg gas cylinders valued at N90, 500, belonging to another complainant, Mr Chigozie Chukwu.

The prosecutor said that the accused was found with all the items when he was caught attempting to steal another gas cylinder.

He said the offence contravened Sections 287, 329, 406 (2) and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The accused denied the charges when they were read to him.

The Magistrate, Mr Y. O. Aro-Lambo, granted him N500, 000 bail with two sureties in like sum.

Aro-Lambo said that the sureties must have means of livelihood, show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government and have their addresses verified.

He adjourned the case until Jan. 15 for trial.
