Kuku Honours EFCC Invitation in September

Kingsley Kuku, who is being investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over conspiracy, stealing, diversion of public funds and abuse of public office, is to appear before the commission on September 30

KINGSLEY Kuku, former special adviser to former President Goodluck Jonathan on Niger Delta Affairs, is to report at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, office for questioning over allegations of fraud on September 30, by 10 am.

Kuku, who is outside the country on medical grounds in a reply to an invitation by the EFCC, said that he was indisposed to appear before the commission on the 28th since he was scheduled for an operation at the Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopardic Centre, United States. Kuku’s letter to the EFCC which was signed by his lawyer, Karina Tunyan, SAN, was dated July 24, 2015.

The letter stated that Kuku “is currently in the United States of America to keep appointment with his doctors at the Andrew Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Centre for surgery on one of his knees. He is expected back in Nigeria at the end of September 2015 after the surgery and recuperation. He will definitely report in your office as a law abiding citizen”.

Kuku’s lawyer also attached the document from the Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Centre for the attention of EFCC.

Wilson Uwujaren, spokesperson of EFCC, confirmed the invitation extended to Kuku by the commission. The EFCC letter with ref. CR 3000/EFCC/ABJ/EG/T7/vol.25/263 and dated July 22, 2015, which was signed by Olufunke Adetayo Ogunbode, head of Economic Governance was sent and received by the Presidential Amnesty Office in Maitama the same day.

In the letter, the EFCC said: “The commission is conducting an inquiry into a case of conspiracy, stealing, diversion of public funds and abuse of public office involving you. In view of the above, you are kindly expected to be interviewed by the undersigned through Chris Owobu on Tuesday, July 28, Owobu at No 5 Formella Street, off, Adetokumbo Ademola, Wuse 2, Abuja at 10am. Kindly accept the assurances of the Executive Chairman’s best wishes and highest regards, please. .

Also, the EFCC has interrogated Baraka Sani, former special assistant to Jonathan on schools and agricultural programme. Sani, who was alleged to have diverted funds meant for the school agricultural programme, was grilled by EFCC operatives  for hours on Wednesday, July 22.

Although she was released, Sani is expected to return with documents that would help her explain her involvement or otherwise in the alleged fraud.
