THE Anambra State House of Assembly has urged the state Government to urgently direct relevant authorities to check the ravaging erosion in Umuabiama Village, Ajali, Orumba North Local Government Area, LGA, of the state.

The situation needs immediate action to safeguard life and property of the community and people residing in the affected area.

The resolution followed a motion sponsored by Emeka Aforka, representing Orumba North constituency and seconded by Lawrence Ezeudu of Dunukofia constituency during plenary on August 18.

The Deputy Speaker, Paschal Agbodike, who presided over the plenary session, had put up the motion, while the legislators unanimously adopted it through voice votes.

“You know how erosion has been ravaging everywhere in the state. I use this opportunity to call on the Federal Ministry of Environment and all the relevant federal agencies to come to Anambra State.

“You people should come and help to support Anambra State Government in tackling the menace of erosion in this state; it is too ravaging,’’ he said.

Speaking on the motion, Aforka said that the gully erosion at Umuabiama village had destroyed buildings and other property and rendered many occupants of the community homeless.

“It is worrisome that some buildings are already on the verge of being destroyed by the ravaging erosion. If no stringent measure is taken to check the menace, as the state expects the return of rains after the ‘August break’.

“Concerned that erosion menace has been a reoccurring environmental problem in Anambra State, which has placed the state as the most affected in South East.’’

Aforka said he was optimistic that a swift intervention in addressing the menace would safeguard life and property of the people residing in the area.

“It will also re-affirm the confidence of people of the community in the government of the day,’’ he added.
