HUMAN rights lawyer, Kazeem Lawal, has advocated the immediate implementation of the 2019 Disability Rights Act, due to the problems faced by physically challenged persons.

Lawal told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in Ibadan, on Monday, that the implementation of the law would engender the full inclusion and participation of people with disabilities in all aspects of our national life.

He said Chapter two of the Nigerian constitution also required some amendments that would make it possible for any government to provide for the social, political, and educational rights of people living with a disability.

“It is my recommendation to the National Assembly to ensure that there is a free and compulsory education included as part of reforms in our constitution.

“Also, it should be in our law that political and appointive positions should be given to physically challenged people, so as to give them a sense of belonging.

“I am aware that very few states give one or two political positions to them, however, this is not enough considering the population of people living with disability in Nigeria,” the lawyer said.

Lawal also suggested that accessible voting centers should be made available for them, with the right voting materials suitable for different forms of disability.

He said that a visually impaired person would require Braille ballot paper, a hearing-impaired person would require a sign language interpreter and an albino, a magnifying glass. (NAN)
