FRENCH President Emmanuel Macron, has appointed former foreign minister, Jean-Yves Le Drian, as his personal envoy to Lebanon, amid the deepening crisis there.

Macron, in a spirit of friendship between the two countries, is committed to resolving the institutional crisis and implementing the reforms needed to rebuild the country, the Élysée Palace said.

Le Drian was to exchange views with all those inside and outside Lebanon who could contribute to a way out of the impasse, it said.

Le Drian plans to travel to Lebanon soon and then report to Foreign Minister, Catherine Colonna, and the president.

He will then suggest possible steps and improvements.

Le Drian was foreign minister from 2017 to 2022 and previously defence minister from 2012.

France has close ties with Lebanon as a former mandate power.

Lebanon has not had a president since former president Michel Aoun’s term ended last October due to rivalry between political groups.

The country has been mired in the worst economic and financial crisis in its history since 2019, due to decades of corruption in politics and the economy. (dpa/NAN)
