A 24-year-old technician, Idowu Yusuf, was on Friday brought before a Yaba Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly belonging to an unlawful society and being in possession of a jack knife.
Yusuf, a resident of Agasa Str., in the Ojo area of Lagos is facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, belonging to an unlawful society and unlawful display of arms in public.
He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The Police Prosecutor, Sgt. Godwin Oriabure, told the court that the defendant committed the offence at 2:00a.m. on Aug. 25, behind the NLCDC office, Ojo, Lagos.
According to him, the defendant, who is a fridge repairer, and some other men (still at large), were members of an unlawful society popularly called “Eiye”.
He said that the police had information of an initiation gathering of the members of the secret society, where the defendant was arrested.
“When he was arrested, he had a jack knife and a locally made bottle for smoking hard drugs in his possession.
“My lord, the defendant and his cultist group have been terrorising the Ojo neighborhood for years,” he said.
The offences contravened Sections 42(a), 51 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
NAN reports that Section 42(a) prescribes a three-year jail term for belonging to an unlawful society, while sections 51 and 411 attract a two- year jail term each for conspiracy and unlawful display of arms in public.
The Magistrate, Mrs S.O. Obasa, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
She said that one of the sureties must be a blood relation to the defendant and that both sureties should be gainfully employed.
Obasa also directed that the sureties should reside within the court’s jurisdiction and show evidence of three years tax payments to the Lagos State Government.
The case was adjourned until Oct. 9, for mention. (NAN)
