Man bags 3 months in correctional centre for possession of Indian hemp

A Senior Magistrates’ Court sitting in Kano on Wednesday sentenced a 21-year-old man, Abubakar Abdullahi, to three months imprisonment for possession of Indian hemp.

Abdullahi, who lives at Gwammaja Quarters Kano, had pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of being in possession of dry leaves suspected to be Indian hemp and public nuisance, following which he was convicted.

Delivering judgment, Senior Magistrate Ibrahim Mansur sentenced the convict to three months at the correctional centre or payment of a fine of N20, 000 for the offence of possession of Indian hemp.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Mr Aminu Kwaru, had told the court that Sgt. Shafi’u Lawan attached to Fagge Police Division, Kano, arrested the convict while on patrol on IBB Way, Kano, on Oct.9.

Kwaru said that on the fateful date at about 10:30 p.m the convict was found in possession of large quantity of dry leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.

He said that the offence contravened sections 391A and 183 of the Penal Code.
