Man jailed 1 month for stealing building materials

AN Area Court in Jos on Thursday sentenced Hussaini Maifata, 26, to one month imprisonment  for stealing building materials from a shop.

The Judge, Shawomi Bokkos, sentenced the convict after he pleaded guilty to trespass and theft, begged the court for leniency.

The Judge gave the convict an option of N 10,000 fine or 1 month imprisonment for theft and asked him to pay the sum of N200, 000 as compensation to the complainant or 6 months imprisonment in default.

Earlier, the police prosecutor, Insp. Ibrahim Gokwat, told the court that the case was reported at the Jos”C” Division Police Station on Sept. 28, 2022, by Mr Hyacinth Opara, the shop owner.

He said the complainant reported that the convict on the same date the case was reported, trespassed into his shop and stole a bending machine cast, iron rods of various sizes and door keys.

The prosecutor further told the court that during police investigation, the convict confessed to have committed the act and two pieces of iron rods were recovered from him.

The offence, he said, contravened the Plateau State Penal Code law of Northern Nigeria. (NAN)
