THE President of the Nigerian Mixed Martial Arts Federation (NMMAF), Henry George, has said that the federation will continue the development of grassroots athletes in the face of COVID-19 as non-contacts’ sports resume.

George told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday that the plan would help discover more athletes before sporting activities resumed fully.

He added that the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation ( IMMAF) had created an internet application to further help in developing athletes.

“In this period of uncertainty and social distancing, we are not sure of when the world will officially return to full sports events.

“We must continue to train and develop our grassroot athletes as a duty because our competing athletes , coaches and officials are leveraging on the IMMAF APP TUTORIAL created by the world governing body.

“As the non-contact sports resume, activities of contact sports must also go on , so that the athletes will not be way back against their counterparts”, he said.

George said that the federation had found the training application very helpful in this pandemic period, adding that the officials training would be in phases.

“ As a federation, we found it very helpful and timely at a time like this”, as it informed us that the first phase of its athletes’ and coaches’ development plan ran from April 17 to April 25, 2020, while the second phase also took place from May 18 to June 2, 2020.

“Our officials’ national course will hold on Sept. 5, 2020, via zoom for all officials in line with COVID-19 protocols.

“As a nation, we must be prepared ahead because we know that this global emergency will definitely come to an end someday and we must remain prepared”, he said. (NAN)
