Ike Ekweremadu, deputy senate president, 53, May 12. Born in Mpu, Aninri local government area of Enugu State, he was educated at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where he earned his first and second degrees in law. He was a former associate lecturer in constitutional and labour laws at the university. He was also the principal partner, Ekweremadu and Co. He was first elected senator representing Enugu West senatorial district in 2003 and re-elected in 2007 and 2011. In the 2015 general elections, Ekweremadu was given a fresh mandate to represent his senatorial zone in the Senate. He holds the national honour of commander of the Federal Republic, CFR, as well as the chieftaincy title of Ikeoha Ndigbo.

Lucky Igbinedion, politician and former governor of Edo State, 58, May 13. Born in Benin City, Edo State, he was educated at Government Primary School, Benin City, 1963-1969; Edo College, Benin City, 1970-1972; Crook Ham Court School, England, 1974-1976; Stevenson College, Scotland, 1976-1978; Jackson State University, USA, 1982-1984. Igbinedion was appointed chairman, Oredo local government area of Edo State, 1987-1989; elected governor of Edo State under the platform of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, in 1999 and was also re-elected for a second term in 2003.

Charles Uzodinma Amanze, medical doctor, 59, May 18. Born in Uvuru Mbaise, Imo State, he was the chairman, University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, UNTH, management board; medical director, PAMO Clinics and Hospitals Limited, Port Harcourt; national secretary, Guild of Medical Directors of Nigeria; member, advisory council of International Biographical Centre, Cambridge, England. He is also a Knight of St Mulumba. He holds the traditional title of Ugochituwere Uvuru, Uvuru Mbaise, Imo State.

Etim Nyong Bassey, chemical engineer, 70, May 11. Born in Oron, Akwa Ibom State, he was educated at Methodist Boys High School, Oron, 1960-1966; Khartov State University, USSR, 1969-1970; Lvov Polytechnic Institute, USSR, 1970-1974; and Bradford University, Bradford, England, 1983-1986. Bassey started his career as a teacher at Salvation Army Secondary School, Eket, 1967-1968; teacher, Hope Waddel Training Institute, Calabar, Cross River State, 1968-1969; appointed chemical engineer, Nortex Nigeria Limited, Kaduna, 1974-1975; planning engineer, Nigerian Steel Development Authority, Lagos/Ajaokuta, 1975-1979; construction and erection engineer, Delta Steel Company, DSC, 1979-1987; assistant general manager, research and equality control, DSC, 1988-1995, and deputy general manager, technical services and environment, DSC, 1995-1996. Bassey who is the former head of chemical engineering department, University of Uyo, is a member of the Nigerian Society of Engineers and member, Council of Registered Engineers of Nigeria, COREN.
