Joy Angelina Ogwu, professor, former minister of foreign affairs, former director-general, Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, NIIA, 69, August 22. She was educated at American Baptist Day School, Port Harcourt; Abimbola Memorial Day School, Yaba, Lagos, 1950-1953; Holy Rosary Secondary School;  State University, New Jersey, USA, 1970-1974; Rutgers University, New Jersey, 1974-1975. She was appointed senior research fellow, Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, 1985; acting director of research, 1985-1986; acting head, Department of International Affairs in 1985, before she was made the director general. Ogwu became minister of foreign affairs during the second tenure of former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Musa

Abdulkadir Balarabe Musa, politician, accountant and former governor of Kaduna State, 79, August 21. Born in Kaya, Kaduna State, he studied in Kaya, Kaduna, 1943-1947; Zaria Middle School, 1947-1952; Institute of Administration, Zaria, 1952-1953. He also attended various colleges in London, between 1961 and 1969. Musa was appointed accounts clerk, 1953-1955; school teacher, 1955-1960; executive officer, 1960-1961; commercial officer, 1965-1966; accountant, 1969-1970; company secretary and chief accountant, 1970-1976. He was elected first civilian governor of Kaduna State in 1979.

Umana Okon Umana, former secretary to the state government, SSG, Akwa Ibom State, 56, August 20. He was educated at St Patrick’s College, Calabar, 1972-1976; University of Calabar, 1976-1980; University of Port Harcourt, 1984-1987. He was appointed lecturer in Economics at the School of Basic Studies, SBS, Akamkpa; principal, budget department, Governor’s office, Uyo, 1989; state’s director of budget, 1998; permanent secretary, budget office, Akwa Ibom, 2000-2003. He was appointed commissioner for finance, Akwa Ibom State, 2003-2007; secretary to the state government of Akwa Ibom in 2007, and was reappointed in 2011.

Louis Obodo, optometrist, company executive, medical director, politician, youth leader, 45, August 22. Born in Obudi, Agwa, Oguta local government area, Imo State, he was educated at Holy Ghost Juniorate, Ihiala, Anambra State, 1982-1988; Abia State University, Uturu, where he obtained a doctorate in Optometry. Obodo won  Imo State scholarship for best student in academics for medical and health sciences, Abia State University, 1989-1996. He is a medical director, Nuns Eye Centre, Abuja; managing director, Ivy-Kay Resources Limited and Do-Nuns Renew Energy Limited Abuja.

Oputu
Oputu

Evelyn Oputu, former chief executive officer, Bank of Industry, 66, August 13. Born in Delta State, she was educated at St. Teresa College, Ibadan, 1960-1964; Federal School of Arts and Science Lagos, 1965-1967; Temple School Secretariat Washington US, 1968-1969; University of Lagos, 1972-75 and Harvard Business school, Boston, 1987. Oputu was the chairman and CEO, KES Products Limited, 1997-2005; Chairman, Committee on the Financial Management of Aviation Parastatals, 2000-2001: Executive Director, First Bank of Nigeria Plc, 1991-1992; International Merchant Bank, 1982-1990. She was also a lead consultant of NDALI consultants which is a financial concern engaged in raising of funds for both debt and equity for private and quoted companies.  Her clients included FAAN, NCAA, NAMA, Nigerian College of Aviation Technology Zaria, NCAT, as well as financial consulting for two merchant banks.
