Ernest Shonekan, lawyer, and former head of the Interim National Government, ING, 77, May 9. Born in Lagos, he was educated in Nigeria, the United Kingdom and the United States of America. He was chairman, Implementation Committee, Vision 2010. Shonekan is a fellow, Institute of Directors and the Nigerian Institute of Management. He is also a member, Board of Trustees, Lambo Foundation, Nigeria Conservation Foundation and Lions Club. He holds the traditional title of Abese of Egbaland.
Jim Ifeanyichukwu Nwobodo, former governor of old Anambra State, former senator and former minister of youths and sport, 73, May 9. Born in Lafia, Nasarawa State, he was educated at the Government Secondary School, Kaduna, Kaduna State; College of Arts, Science and Technology, Enugu, and University of Ibadan. He was a teacher, Kings College, Lagos, and later joined Shell BP, now Shell Petroleum Development Company, SPDC. He was chairman and executive director, Link Group International Limited and Jim International Cargo Agencies Limited.
Dare Babarinsa, journalist, 58, May 9. Born in Oke Mesi, Ekiti State, he was educated at Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Ile-Ife, and the University of Lagos. He was a staff writer, Drum magazine, National Assembly correspondent, National Concord; chief correspondent, National Concord, Akure; assistant editor, Newswatch and executive editor, Tell magazine. He was also the editor-in-chief of the Westerner magazine.
Etim Nyong Bassey, chemical engineer, 68, May 11. Born in Oron, Akwa Ibom State, he was educated at Methodist Boys High School, Oron, 1960-1966; Khartov State University, USSR, 1969-1970; Lvov Polytechnic Institute, USSR, 1970-1974; Bradford University, Bradford, England, UK, 1983-1986. Bassey started his career as a teacher, Salvation Army Secondary School, Eket, 1967-1968; teacher, Hope Waddel Training Institute, Calabar, Cross River State, 1968-1969; appointed chemical engineer, Nortex Nigeria Limited, Kaduna, 1974-1975; planning engineer, Nigerian Steel Development Authority, Lagos/Ajaokuta, 1975-1979; construction and erection engineer, Delta Steel Company, DSC, 1979-1987, assistant general manager, research and quality control, 1988-1995; deputy general manager, technical services and environment, DSC, 1995-1996. Bassey who is presently the head of chemical engineering department, University of Uyo, is a member of the Nigerian Society of Engineers; member, Council of Registered Engineers of Nigeria, COREN.
Ike Ekweremadu, deputy senate president, 51, May 12. Born in Mpu, Aninri local government area of Enugu State, he was educated at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where he earned his first and second degrees in Law. He was a former associate lecturer in constitutional and labour laws at the university. He was also the principal partner, Ekweremadu and Co, was first elected senator representing Enugu West Senatorial District in 2003 and re-elected in 2007 and 2011. He holds the national honour of Commander of the Federal Republic, CFR, as well as the chieftaincy title of Ikeoha Nidgbo.
Franklin Ihekwoaba, chartered accountant, management consultant, financial analyst, managing director, Nima Capital Advisory Partners, Lagos, 49, May 11. Born in Umuokisi, Amuzi, Ahiazu Mbaise, Imo State, he was educated at Sacred Heart Private School, Onireke, Ibadan, 1971-1976; Fatima College, Ikire, Osun State, 1976-1979; Mbaise Secondary School, Aboh Mbasie, Imo State, 1980-1981; University of Minnesota, USA, 1983-1987; South Eastern University, Washington, 1993, and Harvard University, Massachusettes, US. He was accountant, Montgomery County, Maryland, Housing Opportunities Commission, US; director of finance, Blackhawk Security, Finance and Accounting, US; senior associate, US Department of Education; senior consultant, Pricewater House Coopers, and group head, Strategy, Finance and Risk Management, Oando PLC, Lagos. He is also a member of the Certified Institute of Stock Brokers.
