Sam Egwu, former governor of Ebonyi State, 59, June 20. Born in Ezzamgbo, Ohaukwu local government area of Ebonyi State, he was head of the Department of Crop Science, Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, and chairman ESUT Staff School Management Board. Egwu was also chairman, Governing Council, Girls Secondary School, Ezzamgbo, and was a member, Anambra State Central Investment Company. He was a former minister of education.

Tofa

Basher Othman Tofa, businessman and politician, 66, June 20. Born in Kano, Kano State, he was educated at Shuachi Primary School, Kano, 1956-1961; Provincial Secondary School, now Rumfa College , Kano, 1962-1966; City College London. Tofa started his career with Royal Exchange Insurance, 1967-1968; Nigerian Embassy, Khartoun, Sudan. He became manager, Abba Othman and Sons Limited, Kano; chairman, defunct Century Merchant Bank, Lagos; chairman, Abba Othman Investments Limited. He was the presidential candidate, National Republican Convention, NRC, in the 1993 presidential election which he lost. Tofa, who is now a member of the All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP, was a presidential aspirant of the party in 2011 general elections.

Viola Adaku Onwuliri, minister, educationist, author, and professor of Biochemistry, 57, June 18. Born in Umuokisi, Amuzi, Ahiazu Mbaise local government area of Imo State, she was educated at Owerri Girls’ Secondary School, Imo State, 1970-1974; University of Nigeria Nsukka, 1975-1979; University of Jos, 1981-1991; Howard University, Washington DC, USA, 1990; Harvard School of Public Health, Boston, USA. She was a graduate assistant, 1981-1984; assistant lecturer, 1984-1987; lecturer 11, 1987-1990; lecturer 1, 1990-1993; senior lecturer, 1993-2001, reader, 2001-2004; professor, 2004. She is a member, International AIDS Society, Geneva; Nigerian Society of Biochemistry; Nigerian Society of Experimental Biology; African Society for the Biochemistry of Lipids; founder, Federal University of Technology, FUTO, Women Association; member, Auxiliary Knights of St John International, KSJI. She was deputy governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the 2011 elections in Imo State. Onwuliri was later appointed minister of state for foreign affairs by President Goodluck Jonathan in 2011.

Okogie
Okogie

Anthony Olubunmi Okogie, cardinal and former archbishop of Lagos, 77, June 16. Born in Lagos, he was educated at the Holy Cross School, Lagos; St Patrick’s School, Sapele; St Theresa Minor Seminary, Ibadan; St Peter and St Paul Seminary; Urban University, Rome. He was ordained priest in 1966. Okogie was the former president, Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN. He retired in 2012 as archbishop of Lagos diocese.

Sule John Salihu, administrator, civil servant, 60, June 16. Born in Adavi, Kogi State, he attended Government Secondary School, Dekina, Kogi State; Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, National Institute of Small Industry Extension Training, India, 2005. Salihu was appointed member, board of directors, Nigeria Sugar Company, Bacita, Kwara State, 1987-1994; member, National Board for Technical Education Review Committee, 1988-1989; co-coordinator of SON/International Limited.
