Tunde Jonathan Ogbeha, retired soldier, administrator and politician, 66, September 1. Born in Lokoja, Kogi State, he was educated at Maiduguri Primary School, Maiduguri; Nigerian Military School, Zaria, 1962-1967; Nigerian Defence Academy, NDA, Kaduna, 1967-1970; he also attended several military courses in Nigeria and abroad including the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, NIPSS, Kuru, 1987. He was enlisted into the army and was commissioned second lieutenant in 1970, and from then, held various command and staff appointments. Some of the appointments include defence adviser in the Nigerian High Commission in Zimbabwe; military governor of old Bendel State, 1989-1990. He was elected senator representing Kogi West senatorial district, under People’s Democratic Party, PDP, 1999-2007.

Tamunoemi David-West, professor, educationist, administrator and virologist, 77, August 26. Born in Buguma, Rivers State, he was educated at St. Michael’s School, Buguma; Kalabari National College; University College, Ibadan, 1956-1958; Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan, USA, 1958-1960; Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut, USA, 1960-1962; Mc Gill University, Montreal, Canada, 1964-1966. He was appointed lecturer, University of Ibadan; senior lecturer, University of Ibadan; consultant virologist, University College Hospital, 1969; commissioner for education and member of the executive council, Rivers State, 1975-1979. He was a member, governing council, Bendel State University, now Ambrose Ali University, Ekpoma, and Delta State University, Abraka, 1980; member, World Health Organisation, WHO, expert panel on virus diseases. David-West was appointed minister of Petroleum and Natural Resources, 1984.

Olusegun Patrick Odegbami, engineer, ex-footballer and sport journalist, 61, August 27. Born in Lagos, he was educated at St Theresa’s Boys Primary School, Jos, 1958-1965; St Mulumba’s College, Jos, 1966-1970; the Polytechnic, Ibadan, 1971-1972, and 1974-1976. He was appointed project engineer, Edison Group and Partners, 1977-1978; assistant technical officer, Western Nigeria Broadcasting Service and Western Nigeria Television, Ibadan, 1972-1973. Odegbami started his football career with the Housing Corporation Football Club of Ibadan, 1972-1973; played with Western Rovers Football Club, 1973; player, Shooting Stars Football Club, 1974-1984; player national team, Green Eagles, 1976-1982; director, Complete Communications Limited. Odegbami has won many medals, including Third Best Africa Player, 1977 among others.
