Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, engineer, industrialist, politician, 71, September 4. He was educated at St Patrick’s School, Rukpokwu, Port Harcourt, Rivers State; Holy Trinity School, Rumuopara, Port Harcourt; New Bethel College, Onitsha; University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He was appointed site engineer, Nigerian Construction and Furniture Company; chairman/managing director, Hardel and Enic Group of Companies; chairman, ABC Merchant Bank Limited; president, Owerri Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture; chairman, Champion Newspapers Limited, Lagos. Iwuanyanwu is a fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Science and Technology; Council of Registered Engineers of Nigeria, COREN, among others.
Gabriel Osu, Catholic priest, human rights activist and author, 59, September 5. Born in Lagos, he attended St. Thomas Acquinas Primary School, Surulere, Lagos; St. Theresa’s Minor Seminary, Ibadan and St.Peter and Paul Major Seminary, Ibadan. He was ordained a priest on December 5, 1981, at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Ebute-Metta, Lagos, where he is at present, the parish priest. He also earned a Master’s degree, STL-Licentiate, in Theology from the Alfonsiana University, Rome. Osu rose to the post of curate and administrator of the Holy Cross Cathedral, Lagos, where he served under Anthony Cardinal Okogie for several years. He was the director of social communication of the Lagos archdiocese for over two decades and the editor-in-chief of the Catholic Herald. He also directed the Catholic family radio. He is a member of the Nigeria Union of Journalists; Nigeria Institute of Catholic Media Practitioners and Nigerian Institute of International Affairs.
Joshua Nimyel Dogonyaro, retired soldier, 71, September 6. Born in Dakan-Kuka, Plateau State, he was educated at Boys’ Secondary School, Gindiri; Nigeria Defence Academy, Kaduna, 1964-1967; Nigeria Army School of Infantry, Jaji; Armour Officers Course, USA; Armour Car Troop Leaders Course, UK; Command and Staff College; Defence Resources Management Course, USA; National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, NIPSS, Kuru, Jos. He enlisted in the Nigerian Army, 1964, was commissioned second lieutenant in the Nigerian Army Armoured Corps, 1967; officer commanding, 1 Recce Sqadron, NA 1967-1969; chief instructor and adjutant, Recce Training School, NA, 1970-1972; chief of army staff, 1993; member, National Institute; Commander, ECOWAS-Monitoring Group, ECOMOG, March-September, 1991; appointed chief of staff, 1993. He is the chairman of Sky Technology Limited.
Charles Wambebe, pharmacist and administrator, 67, September 8. Born in Kogi State, he was educated at Government Secondary School, Okene, 1962-1966; Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Ile-Ife, 1972; Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, 1979. He became assistant lecturer, 1973-1975; appointed associate professor, ABU, Zaria, 1983-1988; professor of pharmacy, ABU, Zaria, 1988; appointed director, National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development, NIPRD, Abuja, 1988; appointed director-general/ chief executive officer, NIPRD, 1999. Wambebe is a member of Society of Biological Psychiatry; member, Academy of Pharmacology; member, Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
Barnabas Gemade, engineer, administrator and politician, 65, September 4. Born in Mkar, Gboko, Benue State, he was educated at Bristow Secondary School, Gboko, 1964-1968; Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, 1971-1974; City-University, London, 1977-1978. He co-founded, Sam Barns and Partners, 1980-1985; became deputy managing director, Benue Cement Company Limited,Gboko, 1983-1987; managing director, Benue Cement Company PLC, 1987-1992; Secretary for works and housing, Interim National Government, 1993; national chairman, defunct Committee for National Consensus, CNC, 1997-1998; national chairman, People’s Democratic Party, PDP, 1999-2001; elected senator representing Benue State in 2011.
