Alani Ipola Akinrinade, retired lieutenant general, farmer, 74, October 3. Born in Yakooyo, Osun State, he was educated at Offa Grammar School, 1954-1958; Nigeria Military Training College, Kaduna, 1960; Royal Military Academy; Sandhurst, UK, 1960-1962; US Army Infantry School, Fort Benning, USA, 1965-1966; Staff College, Camberly, UK, 1971; Command and Staff College, Jaji. He worked at the ministry of agriculture in the defunct Western Region, Ibadan, 1959-1960; joined the Nigerian Army, 1960, and was promoted second lieutenant, 1962. He was promoted brigadier general, 1974 and major-general, 1975; former officer commanding, 1 infantry division, NA, Kaduna; appointed army chief of staff, and later chief of defence staff, 1979-1981. He was promoted lieutenant general, 1980 and retired voluntarily from the Nigeria Army, 1981. He is chairman, Niger Feeds and Agriculture Operations Limited.

Osunbor

Oserheimen Aigberaodion Osunbor, professor, university lecturer, legal practitioner, politician, 62, October 5. He was educated at the University of Warwick, England. He was a professor of Law at the Lagos State University, LASU; member, Constitutional Conference, 1994-1995; elected senator, representing Edo Central Constituency, 1999; elected governor of Edo State in 2007, but his election was nullified by the Court of Appeal in 2008.

Ajayi Memaiyetan, journalist, public relations consultant, publisher, 71, October 5. He had his primary and post-primary education in Ile-Ife, Osun State, and became a cub reporter in 1961. He was later trained at the International Press Institute under the sponsorship of Rockfeller Foundation at the University of Kenya, Nairobi. He worked with many newspapers and magazines before becoming the managing editor, Triumph newspapers, owned by the Kano State government in 1983. He is an associate member of the British Institute of Public Relations, Advertising and Marketing. Memaiyetan is presently the managing consultant of Adbiz Press Limited, an outfit that publishes Business News magazine.

David Adamu Baikie, educationist, administrator and professor, 82, October 2. Born in Zaria, Kaduna State, he was educated at Holy Trinity School, Kano, 1941-1943; Holy Trinity School, Lokoja, Kogi State, 1944-1945; CMS Middle School, Wusasa, Zaria, 1946-1948; St Peter’s College, Zaria, 1949-1950; Nigeria College of Arts, Science and Technology, Zaria, 1957-1962; Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana, USA, 1962-1964, and 1967-1969. He was a primary school teacher in Gusau and later Zaria; assistant headmaster, 1951-1952; headmaster, 1953-1957; assistant lecturer, Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, 1964-1966; lecturer, 1967-1970; dean, faculty of education, ABU, Zaria, 1971-1974; professor of education, ABU, Zaria, 1971-1978; appointed vice chancellor, University of Benin, 1978-1985 and vice-chancellor, University of Maseru, Roma Lesotho, 1986. Baikie became the pioneer vice-chancellor, Nassarawa State University, Keffi, before he retired.
