Francis Cardinal Arinze, former president, Secretariat for Inter-Religious Dialogue, Vatican, Rome, 81, November 1. He was educated in Nigeria and England. Arinze became cardinal in 1985, and before then, he was president, Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria.

Chuka Momah, sport writer, microbiologist, commentator, historian and administrator, 63, October 28. He had his primary education at Ile-Ife and Modakeke in former Western Region of Nigeria. He later attended Government College, Ibadan, and Government Secondary School, Owerri, Imo State. He graduated from University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Momah worked for various multi-national pharmaceutical conglomerates such as JL Morison and Sons and Jones Nigeria Limited, Merck Sharp and Dohme Nigeria Limited; Nigerian Hoechst Limited; before retiring into private business in 1985. He has been a regular columnist for various publications and presented sport programmes on boxing, athletics, soccer, tennis and basketball for many years on the Network Service of the Nigeria Television Authority, NTA. Momah started writing for Newswatch magazine since its inception. He is a fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Administrative Management. In 2010, he received the Confederation of African Tennis, CAT, award for his service to the game. In the same year, he also received an award from Newswatch for his contributions to the journalism profession.

Emily Okhergen Aig-Imoukhuede, historian, 72, October 27. Born in Sabongida-Ora, Owan, Edo State, she was educated at the Nigerian College of Arts, Science and Technology, Ibadan, 1959-1961, and University of Ibadan, 1961-1964. She was a history teacher at St. Anne’s Secondary School, Ibadan, 1966. She served as a member of the health care financial committee, Federal Ministry of Health; board member, National Universities Commission, NUC, 1986; director, Nigeria Cargo Handling Company, 1987, and president, National Council of Women’s Societies, NCWS, 1988. She is the author of The Seven Maidens and other Stories.

Ukiwe

Ebitu Ukiwe, retired naval officer and businessman, 73, October 26. Born in Abiriba, Abia State, he was educated at Church of Scotland Mission, Abiriba, 1946-1952; Duke Town School, Calabar,1953; Enuda High School, Abiriba, 1954-1958; Adventist  High School, Ihie, 1960; Nigeria Military Training College, Kaduna, 1960-1961; Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmonth, England, 1961-1964, and US Naval War College, USA, 1980-1981. He was enlisted in the Nigerian Navy and was commissioned sub-lieutenant, 1963; promoted lieutenant, 1965; became flag officer, Western Naval Command, NN, 1984-1985, and appointed chief of general staff, 1985-1986. He retired from the Nigerian Navy, 1986. Ukiwe was a member of the National Democratic Coalition that was opposed to the regime of the late Sani Abacha, former Nigerian military head of state.
