Reuben Adeleye Abati, journalist, former chairman, editorial board, Guardian Newspapers, and senior special adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan on media and communication, 49, November 7. Born in Abeokuta, Ogun State, he was educated at St John’s School, Igbeinkuta, Abeokuta, Ogun State, 1971-1976; Lisabi Grammar School, Abeokuta, 1976-1981; University of Calabar, 1981-1985; University of Ibadan, Oyo State, 1986-1987. Abati was appointed graduate assistant, University of Benin, Edo State, 1985-1986; graduate assistant, University of Ibadan, 1986-1990, lecturer, Ogun State University, 1992-1996; consultant, African Leadership Forum, Ota, Ogun State; member, Association of Nigerian Authors, ANA, and member, Nigerian Institute of Management.

Onyema Ugochukwu, journalist, economist, politician and former chairman, Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, and a gubernatorial candidate of the PDP in the 2007 election in Abia State, 70, November 9. Born in Umuahia, Abia state, he was educated at the Methodist College, Uzuakoli, 1959-1965; University of Nigeria, Nsukka, 1966-1967; (which was disrupted as a result of the civil war). He went back to the school and completed his studies in 1972, after the civil war. Ugochukwu was appointed research assistant, Central Bank of Nigeria, Lagos, in 1973. He later became editor of Business Times and later Daily Times. He was past president, Nigeria Guild of Editors, NGE.

Boniface Chukwuka Egboka, professor and vice chancellor, Nnamdi Azikwe University, NAU, Awka, Anambra State, 66, November 11. Born in Umuchu, Aguata local government area, Anambra State, he was educated at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, 1971-1974; University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, 1976-1980, where he obtained an MSc in Environmental Earth Sciences and Hydrogeology, and a PhD in Environmental Earth Science, 1980. Egboka started his career as a junior research fellow, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, 1980-1982; senior lecturer, Anambra State University of Technology, now Anambra State University, 1982-1984; commissioner for Works and Transport, Anambra State, 1995-1997 and deputy vice chancellor, Nnamdi Azikwe University, Awka, 2007.

Bala Takaya, politician, administrator and university lecturer, 65, November 5. Born in Mabuguva, Mubi, Adamawa State, he was educated at School of Basic Studies; Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria; London School of Economic and Political Science, 1977-1978. Takaya was appointed lecturer, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, 1976-1983; special adviser/secretary to the old Gongola State Government, 1979-1981; senior lecturer, University of Jos, 1983-1987; member, Political Bureau, 1987; director, Centre for Development Studies, University of Jos, 1987 and governorship candidate of All Peoples Party, APP, later All Nigerian Peoples Party, ANPP, in Adamawa State in 1999. In 2003, he decamped to Alliance for Democracy, AD.

Daniel Aiyanyo Omoigui, chartered and registered surveyor, 83, November 10. Born in Iguagban, Benin, in the present Uhunmwode local government area of Edo State, he was educated at Immaculate Conception College, Benin, St. Patrick’s College, Asaba, and University College, Ibadan. He later left the shores of Nigeria and was trained at the Royal School of Military Survey, Newbury Berks, England, 1958-1959; the International Institute for Geo-information Science and Earth Observation, The Netherlands, in 1973 and University of Pittsburgh, U.S.A., 1976. He joined Federal Surveys in 1957; worked extensively in different parts of the country. In 1969, he was in charge of investigations, delimitation, demarcation and maintenance of International and Interstate boundaries. In 1970, he was asked to build up the boundaries unit in federal surveys and subsequently, participated in the Nigerian-Cameroon boundary negotiations. As director of federal surveys, he spearheaded the establishment of the National Boundaries Commission, and the Surveyors Registration Council, SURCON. He retired as surveyor-general o the federation in 1988.
