Mohammed Lawal Uwais, former chief justice of Nigeria, 81, June 12. Born in KADUNA, Kaduna State, he was educated at the Institute of Administration, Ahmadu Bello University, ABU, Zaria; University of London and Inn of Court, School of law, London. He was called to the Bar at the Middle Temple, London, 1963. Uwais was assistant publicity secretary at the ministry of information, northern Nigeria, 1959-1964; state counsel, 1966-1970; acting chief judge of Kaduna State, 1976. He moved to the Court of Appeal, 1979-1985, and became the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, 1991-1992; Chief Justice of Nigeria, 1995. He was appointed to head a committee that reviewed the nation’s electoral laws by late President Umaru Yar’Adua, 2007.
