CROSS River Ministry of Local Government Affairs and the State Local Government system Service Commission, have pledged to foster development and advancement in the system.

The Commissioner for Ministry of Local Government Affairs, Mrs. Stella Odey, and Dr. Peter Adigeb, Chairman of the Local Government Service Commission, made the pledge on Monday when the latter visited the commissioner in her office in Calabar.

The commissioner said that the synergy between the two would enhance growth and development of the local government system in the state.

“Without synergy between the Ministry and the Commission, growth in the Local Government sector will be hindered.

“So, as a ministry, we are willing to synergise with you at all times; you are responsible for service delivery as a Commission while we supervise the projects that are being funded by the Ministry.

“Altogether our aim is to ensure that development gets to the grassroots,” Odey said.

The Commissioner also stressed the need to instill discipline amongst Local Government staff, while assuring that all issues of concern raised, would be resolved strategically.

According to him, the essence of the visit was to introduce members of the Commission to the Commissioner.

“It is also to seek synergy between the Commission and the Ministry and rub minds on issues that affect the Local Government System, ” he said.

He said that without synergy, the staff of the Unified Local Government Service cannot function optimally as regards service delivery.

He appreciated the Commissioner for being instrumental to the release of three months’ statutory deductions to the Commission, describing the feat as, “a sign of positive synergy between the Commission and the ministry.”

Adigep further enumerated issues tackled by the Commissioner through the Personnel Audit exercise carried out between 2016 and 2019 in an attempt to stem out unwholesome practices in the system, including incidences of ghost workers on the payroll, deceased pensioners on the payroll, overpaid/underpaid/omitted names.

He said there was the need for stakeholders and MDAs that constitute the Local Government Service to operate within their mandate. (NAN)
