SANUSI Lamido Sanusi, governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, has added another feather to his already colourful hat. On November 23, he was conferred with an Honorary Doctorate in Economics by Oduduwa University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, alongside Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, minister of finance.

According to the University, Sanusi, a recipient of several international and local awards, was chosen for the honour solely on the basis of merit on account of his excellent management of the economy and financial system. J.

Adeleke Ogunwale, vice chancellor of the university, described Sanusi as a very brilliant and extremely intelligent person. He commended him for his courage and vision in taking necessary steps to stabilise the Nigerian banking system.

In his acceptance speech, Sanusi expressed pride in his selection for the honour.  He noted that the fact that both he and the minister of finance were being honoured on the same day emphasised the importance of managing the economy effectively and keeping it sound for all citizens. He gave an assurance of their continued commitment to keep working for the growth and stability of the economy in a way that would translate to noticeable improvement in the standard of living of all Nigerians.

In her remarks, the Okonjo-Iweala, who attended the event with her husband, Ikemba Iweala, thanked the institution for selecting them for the honour.  While congratulating the graduands and wishing them well, she charged them, with the words of a former American President not to ask what their country can do for them but to ask what they can do for their country.

Some of the dignitaries at the event were Ramon Adegoke Adedoyin, pro-chancellor and chairman of council of the university, Okunade Sijuade, chancellor and Ooni of Ife Kingdom, Anastasia M. Daniel-Nwaobia, permanent secretary, federal ministry of finance. Others are Bright Okogwu, director general, budget office, CBN, Iyabode Adedoyin, chairman, board of trustees of Oduduwa University, Lamido Yuguda, CBN director of reserve management and Abdullahi Ahmad, director of governors’ department, CBN.
