MTN Communications Nigeria Limited has spent more than N11 billion on social responsibility projects since it began operation in the country. Adekunle Adebiyi, general manager, regional operation (North), MTN Communications Nigeria, stated this at the Junior Secondary School, Kutungu, in the Gwagwalada area of Abuja, when he led a team of the company’s employees to donate a digital library to the school.

“Every year, a particular percentage of MTN’s profit is dedicated to corporate social responsibility, CSR. That happens every year. I am aware that so far, close to N11billion has been spent on such activities. The department that is dedicated to giving back to the society is known as the MTN Foundation. They publish their results and celebrated their 10-year anniversary recently.”

Adebiyi said apart from the CSR activities carried out on behalf of the company by MTN Foundation, the firm also dedicated the first 21 days in the month of June to caring activities provided by its employees. “In the month of June of every year, MTN has dedicated the first 21 days to giving back to society especially in education. It is one of the key pillars we invest in. Health is another one. Twenty-one days of Y’hello Care is about going to the society where we operate to give back to selected schools.

“Every year, we select some schools. We go to those schools and we give key items. We give care to the society for a period of 21 days. That is why we are here today. We are giving this particular school a digital library. We gave another digital library yesterday (Monday) to another school in Dutse Alhaji. Some other schools that are not getting digital libraries this year are getting other items. We met the leader of the Association of Principals in this zone and he told us that the school that he manages once got a borehole from MTN. I was happy when I heard that. To some schools, we had given chemistry laboratories. These are the kind of things we do. This is also happening all over the country. It is not just in the North, where we are now. Simultaneously, other senior managers are leading some other teams in other parts of the country during this period of 21 days of care,” he said.
