THE National Electoral Commission, NEC, in Sierra Leone has suspended preparations for the nation’s March 27, presidential run off votes.
A High Court on Saturday, March 24, in Freetown, ordered a halt to the run off poll pending hearing of a petition by a private lawyer over alleged malpractices during the inconclusive March 7, general elections, legal sources said.
The lawyer in the petition filed on March 22, is among others seeking a recount of the 2.6 million votes cast during the elections and a forensic audit of the electoral system.
Realnews reports that before the suspension, NEC said it is aware of the High Court’s interim injunction but is going ahead with preparations for the March 27 presidential run-off vote in line with provisions of the country’s Constitution.
It has also requested security for its premises, staff and sensitive materials.
