NEDC pledges scholarships for young school athletes

THE North East Development Commission (NEDC) has pledged to award scholarships to outstanding secondary school student athletes from the North East States.

Alhaji Goni Alkali, Managing Director of NEDC made the pledge at the final of the North East States secondary school sport tournament in Bauchi on Wednesday.

He said the commission would award scholarship to students from Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba, and Yobe who excel at the tournament

“Winners in football, volleyball, basketball, athletics, and others would be given scholarships to cover their education expenses for being,” he said.

Alkali, represented by the Director training and scholarship of the commission, Mr Khalifa Lawal, said the commission has been at the forefront of supporting sporting activities in the region.

He said the commission had consistently supported education and sports development in the region.

Alkali said the tournament is aimed at discovering young talents as well as promoting unity, peace, and regional integration.

Earlier, Mohammed Salis, Bauchi State Commissioner for Sport and Youth Development, said the tournament would provide an avenue for the state to discover talents among youth.

He, however, reminded the commission to expedite action on plans to establish a sports academy in the State.

NAN reports that the tournament featured football, volleyball, basketball, long tennis, table tennis, athletics, among others.(NAN)
