THE Youth Wing of Urhobo Progressive Union (UPU), Worldwide, has called for sustained unity among Urhobo people.

The group made the call on Thursday at its Secretariat in Agbarho Community, Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta.

Mr Duru Ufuoma, UPU President (Youth Wing), said the call became necessary to enable them to leverage on the successes achieved by the founding fathers of the apex Urhobo socio-cultural body.

Ufuoma said: “I urge all Urhobo youths worldwide to collectively maintain one strong voice, which articulates the various democratic individual, group or union voices.

“This is to ensure continuity of all social and association arrangements such as the UPU.

“For keeping the Urhobo together as a powerful family with consensus demonstration on political, educational, cultural, traditional among others.

“UPU is our greatest heritage and we will not let this heritage slip out of our hands.”

He urged the youth to continue to toe the path of peace, unity and progress to sustain its heritage and also increase the legacies of the founding- fathers.

Ufuoma urged the youth to love one and another, have frequent interaction with the elders, retained the core culture and values of Urhoboland, stand for the truth always and avoid self-centeredness.

He said that UPU, founded in 1931, was premised on the basis of attracting progress to Urhobos and the Urhoboland.

Ufuoma said that the union came into being at a special congress of Urhobo patriotic elites in 1931 with its original name as Urhobo Brotherly Society.

According to him, the name (Urhobo Brotherly Society)
was changed to UPU in the mid 30s.

Ufuoma said that the creation of UPU was inspired by the imperative need in the 1930s for the Urhobo people to have a united and focussed platform to defend Urhobo national interest, among others.

He said that the union had attracted at lot of development to Urhoboland since its creation.

“We are gathered here today to celebrate the foundational efforts of our founding fathers,”Ufuoma said.
