NIGCOMSAT to host grand finale ‘Actinspace’ innovation contest

The Nigeria Communication Satellite (NIGCOMSAT) Ltd. says it is set to host the nationals of the Actinspace innovation contest, scheduled for Nov. 13.

This was said in a statement signed by the General Manager, Corporate Affairs of NIGCOMSAT, Mr Adamu Idris in Abuja on Wednesday.

Actinspance is an international competition targeted at students of tertiary institutions, IT startups and entrepreneurs to utilise space technologies to create solutions that improves everyday life.

He said the nationals would be in the form of a ‘hackathon’, where the successful participants would work in teams over a 24-hour period to develop marketable solutions to pertinent national and global issues through the use of space technologies.

Idris said the 2020 Actinspance is organised in collaboration with NIGCOMSAT; the Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy; African Aeronautics & Space Organisation (AASO).

Others are the National Centre for Space Studies- France (CNES); European Space Agency (ESA); Airbus and others.

He said the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Pantami, would declare the event open while the Managing Director of NIGCOMSAT, Dr Abimbola Alale would be the host.

“The Hackathon would provide the finalists with an opportunity to fine-tune their proposed solutions, and create indigenous solutions to global challenges.

“Finalists and runners up would emerge at the end of the Hackathon of which the first place winner represents Nigeria at the global ACTINSPACE event in Paris, France in 2021, Idris said.

“Alma Okpalefe, the Local Organising Committee Chairperson is optimistic about Nigeria’s debut.

“We are so pleased with the excellence, commitment and obvious talent of the national participants and are expecting to see Nigeria win the global ACTINSPACE challenge in 2021. (NAN)
