The All Progressives Congress (APC) said on Tuesday, that Nigeria’s democracy was in desperate need of a viable and coherent opposition political party.

Mr Yekini Nabena, APC Deputy National Publicity Secretary said this in a statement, stressing that the PDP had failed as an opposition party.

According to him, the PDP as an opposition party lacked the capacity to provide rigorous and intelligent interrogation of the policies and programmes of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led APC administration.
Nabena was reacting to the PDP’s call on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deregister APC and declare vacant seats of its lawmakers.

He said the APC had initially dismissed the statement credited to the spokesperson of the PDP as fake news, until further checks confirmed its authenticity.
“If the PDP assumes this as its standard of opposition politics, then our democracy is in danger.
“We reiterate our frustration that the PDP is pushing Nigeria into a one party state which the APC does not subscribe to.
“In place of the failed PDP, we repeat our call to other opposition parties to seize the opportunity and play the true role of opposition which our democracy and governance need to flourish,’’ Nabena said.

He said it was common knowledge that the PDP leadership was facing serious crisis of confidence.

Nabena added that it was however, commendable that the PDP had taken keen interest in APC’s internal party processes, particularly the virtual National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Tuesday.

He expressed optimism that the PDP would learn a thing or two on proper party management, progressive politics and internal democracy from the APC.

The APC spokesman added that the PDP could however, start by paying its staff salaries. (NAN)
