The National Orientation Agency (NOA) in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Funds (UNICEF) has organised a workshop for key stakeholders on how to address issues of violence against children and women in Katsina State.
The NOA Acting State Director, Alhaji Yahaya Adamu, said on Thursday in Katsina that the one-day event was meant to build the capacity of the stakeholders on how to address violence against children and women in the state.
Adamu said that the stakeholders included community leaders, religious organisations, community-based organisations and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs).
He said that Katsina was amongst the states that had serious issues affecting children and women that needed to be properly addressed.
Represented by a Deputy Director in the agency, Alhaji Muntari Lawal-Tsagem, Adamu said the problems included deprivation of girl-child education and child abuse.
He, however, observed that so many people perceived those issues as being normal, and failed to take action to effectively address them.
“It is therefore in this regard that the UNICEF in collaboration with relevant stakeholders finds it necessary to identify and build the capacity of key stakeholders on social and behaviour change in the communities,” he said.
The acting director urged the media to intensify efforts at enlightening people on addressing the menace in the society.
In his remarks, the UNICEF representative, Dr Ogu Enemaku, stressed the need to address the problem of violence against children and women in the state.
Enemaka said that the one-day workshop had the theme: “Building the Capacity of Communication for Development (C4D) stakeholders on Planning and Implementation of Strategic Communication and Alliance for Children and Women”.
He said that though governments were trying their best in that direction, but they could do it alone, hence the need for all and sundry to join hands to address the problems.
“The meeting will build an alliance of all groups to address these problems and to promote birth registration in the state,” he said. (NAN)
